Project Overview

Welcome to the Great Gum Belt Project. We are planting 125 million Gum Arabic trees (famously nicknamed the “miracle tree”) and in the process transforming the landscape of Sudan while helping to enhance the global supply chain of one of nature’s most vital natural resources. Gum Arabic is an essential ingredient in countless everyday products, from food and beverages to pharmaceuticals and household items like paint. Yet this remarkable tree does more than just supply the world—it restores degraded land, fights desertification, provides sustainable livelihoods for local communities, and captures carbon to combat climate change. The Great Gum Belt Project aligns with 10 of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, creating a ripple effect of positive change that extends far beyond our planting sites. Each tree represents hope, resilience, and a commitment to building a more sustainable future for Sudan and the world. Join us in planting hope, one miracle tree at a time.

Project Impact

The Great Gum Belt Project delivers measurable environmental, social, and climate benefits across Sudan’s vulnerable dryland regions. Our acacia trees are planted with a target survival rate of 70 to 85 percent, a benchmark that reflects both rigorous field management and strong community participation. Each tree has the potential to sequester an estimated 0.15 to 0.25 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent over a ten-year period. While these estimates are not used for credit claiming, they highlight the long-term climate value of restoring acacia woodlands in areas heavily affected by desertification. Beyond carbon, the project strengthens local livelihoods by creating employment opportunities, diversifying income sources, and supporting women and youth through training and land stewardship activities. By restoring degraded land, the project improves soil fertility, enhances water retention, reduces wind erosion, and establishes sustainable agroforestry systems that benefit communities and ecosystems alike

Project Proof

Transparency and verification are central to how the Great Gum Belt Project operates. Every tree is recorded using GPS tagging to ensure accurate monitoring of planting locations and long-term growth patterns. Each plot is documented through detailed registers that track planting events, maintenance activities, and survival performance. Field teams collect photographic evidence across all sites to provide visual confirmation of progress and environmental conditions. In addition, periodic survival audits are carried out to measure tree health, validate survival rates, and guide adaptive management. This combination of digital records, on-ground verification, and independent auditing ensures that the project remains accountable and that its outcomes are fully traceable over time.
