Project Overview

KyoGreen Clean Energy Systems, an initiative of Kyoto Network, is transforming lives across the Kenya through renewable energy innovation. With over 2.3 billion people still dependent on open fires and traditional stoves for daily cooking; a practice that causes millions of deaths annually, drives deforestation, and deepens energy poverty, KyoGreen is delivering practical, sustainable solutions that reimagine how families, schools, and communities cook, learn, and live. By converting organic waste and animal manure into biogas and pairing it with solar-powered cooking and lighting systems, KyoGreen creates a scalable, locally maintained clean energy network that improves health, protects the environment, and fosters economic resilience. Its household biogas units replace charcoal and kerosene with smoke-free cooking, while school biogas systems power kitchens serving up to 600 students daily and generate surplus electricity for classrooms. The process completes a circular energy loop turning waste into fuel and producing nutrient-rich organic fertilizer that enhances food security and soil regeneration thus proving that clean energy can empower communities and restore ecosystems at the same time.

Project Impact

  • The KyoGreen Clean Energy Systems initiative delivers significant environmental, health, and socio-economic benefits across Kenya and Zanzibar. By replacing traditional biomass fuels with household and institutional biogas systems, the project reduces reliance on charcoal, kerosene, and firewood, easing pressure on forests and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Cleaner cooking environments substantially improve indoor air quality for families and school kitchens, helping to prevent respiratory illnesses that disproportionately affect women and children. The conversion of organic waste and animal manure into biogas creates a sustainable source of fuel for homes, canteens, and community gatherings, while larger community and commercial biogas plants generate enough energy to support education facilities and local enterprises. Each installation forms part of a waste-to-energy cycle that not only supplies clean cooking fuel but also produces nutrient-rich organic fertiliser, enhancing soil health and local food security. The initiative stimulates local employment through installation, maintenance, and entrepreneurship opportunities, supporting women and youth in particular. Through these combined outcomes, KyoGreen advances clean energy access while building resilient, community-driven economies.

Project Proof

  • Project verification is supported by a comprehensive documentation and monitoring framework that ensures each KyoGreen system performs reliably and delivers measurable results. Installation records capture the technical specifications and commissioning details for every unit deployed, while user surveys provide field-level insights into functionality, satisfaction, and household benefits. Periodic monitoring confirms biogas output, system health, and fuel displacement over time. Operations and maintenance logs track ongoing servicing, ensuring continued performance in both household and institutional settings. In addition, project-specific measurement, reporting, and verification processes record energy production, reduction of traditional biomass use, and associated environmental impacts. Metering logs, commissioning reports, and progress check-ins further validate the operational integrity of each installation. Together, these records create a transparent, traceable evidence base demonstrating that the systems are functioning as designed and delivering verified social, environmental, and economic benefits.
