Sustainable Aviation Fuel Plants

Sustainable Aviation Fuel Plants

UAE

Project Overview

The Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Plants project is a landmark Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) initiative developed by Kyoto Network to accelerate the UAE’s transition towards low-carbon aviation. By producing sustainable aviation fuel from captured carbon and renewable feedstocks, this project represents a critical step in decarbonising one of the hardest-to-abate sectors: air travel.

These plants will deliver drop-in fuel alternatives that significantly reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions, all while leveraging the UAE’s growing leadership in clean energy and sustainable infrastructure.

What is Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)?

SAF is a next-generation jet fuel made from renewable or waste-derived sources — including biomass, agricultural residues, municipal waste, or even captured CO₂ — instead of crude oil. It works seamlessly with existing aircraft and fueling infrastructure but can reduce lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional aviation fuel.

How the Project Works

The SAF Plants use a combination of:

  • Captured Carbon from industrial sources or Direct Air Capture (DAC)
  • Renewable hydrogen or biomass-based inputs
  • Advanced chemical conversion technologies (e.g. Fischer-Tropsch or alcohol-to-jet processes)

to produce high-grade sustainable aviation fuel for commercial airlines, cargo, and defense applications.

Pioneering Sustainable Aviation in the Gulf

By establishing state-of-the-art SAF production facilities, Kyoto Network is helping position the UAE as a regional and global leader in climate-resilient aviation infrastructure. These plants are not just about fuel — they represent an integrated model for circular carbon economies, climate leadership, and sustainable industrial transformation.

This project exemplifies Kyoto Network’s approach: scalable climate solutions, driven by innovation, with real-world impact.

Project Impact

The SAF initiative delivers wide-ranging environmental and economic benefits by addressing one of the most difficult sectors to decarbonise. Sustainable Aviation Fuel enables airlines to significantly reduce their carbon footprint without modifying aircraft or operational practices, providing an immediate and scalable pathway to emission reduction. By utilising captured carbon and renewable inputs, SAF transforms waste carbon into a productive resource, supporting circular-economy ambitions and helping limit the accumulation of atmospheric greenhouse gases.

Local production of SAF enhances energy security by reducing reliance on imported fossil-based jet fuel and promoting the development of domestic clean energy industries. This shift stimulates innovation, investment, and high-skilled employment across the clean technology and transportation sectors. The initiative also aligns with international aviation climate frameworks, helping operators meet emerging regulatory requirements and supporting global efforts to stabilise and lower aviation emissions. Through these combined outcomes, SAF drives meaningful progress toward more sustainable and climate-resilient air transport systems.

Project Proof

The SAF programme is supported by rigorous technical evaluation and documentation that ensures transparency and accountability at each stage of development. All project components (feedstock sourcing, carbon utilisation pathways, and fuel production processes) are assessed against accepted sustainability and safety standards. Lifecycle emissions modelling, third-party technical validation, and continuous performance monitoring provide clear evidence of environmental benefits.

Operational data, supply-chain documentation, and quality assurance protocols confirm compliance with international aviation fuel specifications. In addition, stakeholder partnerships, feasibility studies, and structured progress reporting allow for ongoing assessment of project milestones and long-term outcomes. This robust verification framework ensures that all SAF activities under Kyoto Network deliver measurable, traceable, and credible climate impact.
